Reliability and validity of the power-mobility community driving assessment
The Power-Mobility Community Driving Assessment (PCDA) is a performance-based measure designed to assess driving performance of individuals using power wheelchairs or http://www.easymedonline.com/Mobility-Scooters-s/20.htm in community environments. This article reports the results of pilot testing and an evaluation of the assessment’s reliability and validity. Pilot testing was conducted with a random selection of Canadian occupational therapists working in the area of mobility. Although the response rate was very low, feedback confirmed the utility of the measure and contributed to one substantive scoring revision. Reliability and validity testing was conducted with a sample of 34 drivers. Internal consistency results were positive. Interrater reliability was fair to high but limited by the lack of variability in the scores. Construct validity hypotheses were tested on the relationships between PCDA scores and vision, perception, cognition, and environmental accessibility. Results indicated no relationships between the PCDA and perceptual and cognitive function and only a weak trend for a relationship with environmental accessibility. Concurrent validity was established: PCDA scores were positively associated with the judgments of therapists familiar with the driving performance of participants. In summary, the PCDA has moderate to good reliability, and content and concurrent validity results were found. More research is needed, particularly on the underlying constructs of successful driving performance. At this point, rehabilitation professionals and their clients are urged to use this assessment to establish driving performance rather than relying on assessments of perception, cognition, or environmental accessibility to predetermine whether someone will receive power mobility. Clinicians may find this a useful tool to identify where clients are able to drive safely in community settings, to identify specific learning needs, and, through those, to promote independent living for drivers of power-mobility devices.

Relationship between resultant force at the pushrim and the net shoulder joint moments during manual wheelchair propulsion in elderly persons
OBJECTIVE: To determine the relationship between the resultant force at the pushrim and the net shoulder joint moments during manual wheelchair propulsion in elderly persons. DESIGN: Convenience sample. SETTING: Motion analysis laboratory. PARTICIPANTS: Older manual wheelchair users (N=14; age, 68.2+/-5.2y) were tested. INTERVENTIONS: Kinematic and kinetic data were collected during manual wheelchair propulsion at a speed between 0.96 and 1.01m/s for 10 seconds and at a power output around 22.4W on a power wheelchairs ergometer. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Net shoulder joint moments were computed with an inverse dynamic model. The mechanical use of the forces at the pushrim and the mechanical fraction of effective force were measured during propulsion. Comparison of blood lactate elimination in individuals with paraplegia and able-bodied individuals during active recovery from exhaustive exercise
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to compare blood lactate elimination between individuals with paraplegia (P) and able-bodied (AB) individuals after strenuous arm exercise. METHODS: Eight P and 8 AB men (matched for age, height, and weight) participated in this study. Immediately after the exercise test, the participants performed arm cranking for another 30 minutes at a workload of one third of the maximally achieved power output. During this active recovery, mixed-capillary blood samples were taken for lactate analysis. RESULTS: The lactate accumulation constant was significantly higher for P individuals, whereas the lactate elimination constant showed no significant difference between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Individuals with paraplegia seem to have no disadvantages in lactate elimination after exhaustive arm exercise compared with able-bodied individuals

This study describe an experiment measuring the moment of inertia of an electric power wheelchairs (EPW) using a torsional pendulum method. Inertia of the wheelchair is an important factor for control, which is a key issue in wheelchair driving. The experimental test platform consisted of a bottom circular wood plate, an upper metal plate, and four ropes. Materials with known moments of inertia such as the metal disk and cylinder were used to test the accuracy of the system. The EPW used in the experiment was Invacare G3 Torque SP Storm Series. The ANSI/RESNA wheelchair standards: sample evaluation and guide to interpreting test data for prescribing power wheelchairs
This study is a joint project of ECRI and the National Rehabilitation Hospital, supported by a grant from the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR, U.S. Department of Education, Agreement No. H133E80016). ECRI is the first independent laboratory to test power wheelchairs and power wheelchairs according to the standards of the Rehabilitation Engineering Society of North America (RESNA), now known as the Association for the Advancement of Rehabilitation and Assistive Technology (AART); these standards will ultimately be distributed by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). We tested 10 power wheelchairs, which are similar in size and configuration, from seven manufacturers; all units are intended for adult use. Our testing showed that none of the sample wheelchairs are ideal for all environments in which these devices are typically needed. Each unit has advantages that should be carefully considered when specifying a power wheelchair. Numerous factors are involved in prescribing power wheelchairs, and learning the subtle differences in features and performance of a particular model and how they will affect the user is difficult. In addition, acquiring objective information about power wheelchairs from manufacturers is not typically easy. Considering these factors, and because the standards on which we based our testing do not generally provide criteria for passing or failing models under test, we did not rate the units. The purpose of this article is to present the data collected in our study, using wheelchair performance characteristics based on some parts of the ANSI/RESNA wheelchair standards, as an example of what prescribers can expect to receive from manufacturers and to provide guidance in interpreting and applying the data in writing power wheelchair prescriptions. Thus, this article provides an overview of the types of problems faced by those who specify power wheelchairs for users, the problems faced by the users themselves, and the components that are most susceptible to damage during use.

Handicap needs awareness

I would like to raise people’s awareness of www.easymedonline.com needs around the Laboratory workplace. People on crutches, scooters and wheelchairs have some different needs than the ambulatory. I am the first to admit that when I was ambulatory I was unaware of the environment around me in these terms. However, now that I am in a wheelchair, I would like to share with my co-workers some needs and easy-to-do things for people around the Lab.
Doors are a big issue. People in power wheelchairs, scooters etc., need to place themselves to the side of the door to open it. Objects such as trash cans, tables and chairs placed next to the door result in a situation where a disabled person cannot open the door. Please make sure that a 3-foot-wide space is available between the side of the door that opens and any object placed along the wall.
Another issue is bathrooms. If there are multiple stalls available please do not choose the wheelchair accessible stall if you do not need it. It is frustrating and potentially unpleasant to have to wait for the bathroom stall because it is occupied when three other stalls are available.
Wheelchairs, scooters and crutches require more maneuvering room than just the typical human body. Objects piled in hallways can create impassible situations. Imagine not being able to go to a meeting or your office because the hallway was blocked and there was no way around.
Even though it seems like sitting in a wheelchair or scooter requires no effort, disabled people are often plagued by fatigue. And, little tasks such as opening doors can require a great deal of effort. Think about how we would feel to go about the day with a bungee cord around our legs and arms.
